Friday Favorites #16

Hi there, friends! Happy Friday! I hope that you have some fun plans on your weekend agenda. It's felt a little crazy around here this week. You know those weeks where it feels like you just cannot get caught up no matter how hard you try? Yeah, I've had one of those! I'm really hoping to take this weekend to just catch up on things, including some recipe testing and fun projects for you guys! So, besides bridesmaid dress shopping on Sunday afternoon with my sister for her wedding (yay!!!) I'll be chipping away at some blog posts and other miscellaneous things. 

Before I sign off for the weekend I'm stopping by with my usual round-up of the things that made me smile this week. As usual, I'd love to hear what you've been loving. Let me know in the comments!

1. Target's Dollar Spot: Christmas Edition

Oh man, guys, we're in trouble. Target's Dollar Spot has done it yet again. They now have Christmas gift bags, wrapping paper, gift tags, and everything that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside stocked and ready to jump into your shopping cart. ALL FOR ONE DOLLAR. It took everything in me to not grab about ten of everything. If you haven't been to Target recently and love hopping on the Christmas train early like I do - go!!! 

2. Nutrition/Beauty YouTube Channel

Excuse the not-so-pretty screenshot from my phone, but I've been following Becca's YouTube channel for awhile now, and I always love her videos! Becca's a Registered Dietitian and shares nutrition information on her channel, like how to choose the healthiest granola bars and different healthy dinner ideas! She also posts make-up and skincare videos every so often which I love! Definitely check her out!

3. HIIT & Ab Workout

Have you guys ever done a workout from Tone It Up's YouTube channel? If not, you're missing out! Karena and Katrina's workouts are awesome. I mean...look at them! They must be doing something right. Their workouts are relatively short, but you'll quickly work up a sweat while doing one! This HIIT and Ab workout is calling your name for a quick weekend workout. Give it a try!

4. Love Your Melon Winter Hats

I follow Love Your Melon on Instagram and they recently just came out with their new line of winter hats, and man, they're adorable! One of these will be going right to the top of my Christmas list. The best part? During the holiday season Love Your Melon donates 50% of their proceeds of each hat to nonprofit partners to help fight pediatric cancer. It's a feel good kinda gift, friends. 

5. Hallmark Channel's Christmas Movies

Okay, I may or may not be a little, teensy, tiny bit embarrassed that this made it to my Friday Favorites. To be completely honest, I totally used to make fun of Hallmark's cheesy-everything-works-out holiday movies. BUT, I've had a change of heart. You know, sometimes it's just nice to watch a movie that's uber cheesy and has everything work out just the way it's supposed to in the end. If you were nodding your head when I was talking about jumping on the Christmas chain early, turn on the Hallmark channel at some point this weekend. I bet you'll end up changing your mind just like me (if you don't already love it)!

Friday Favorites #4

Hi friends! It's a great morning because it's FRIDAY!!! I went to a Food Show with my mom yesterday - she's the Food Director at the high school I went to. It was interesting to see what different products vendors are offering schools, and we walked away with quite a few samples...

I'm totally eyeing up the individual servings of the steel cut oats in the vanilla honey flavor, yum! Let's get into Friday Favorites now though...

1. Alie's home for the weekend!

My sister, Alie, is engaged and now lives with her hubby-to-be, but she'll be home this weekend. I'm super excited to have some sister time with her which will probably include indulging quite a bit in things like cheese, wine, and maybe (probably) some dessert - pretty much all of the most delicious things :)

2. Gin-Gins 

These little chewy treats are THE BOMB.COM, or at least I think so! My mom and I found these at a local farm and then ordered some off of Amazon because they are that good (click HERE to order your own bag). We absolutely LOVE the peanut flavor! If you've ever had a Maryjane candy they taste super similar, just with a hint of ginger and heat. Buuuut, if you aren't a peanut fan they have the original ginger flavor and also a coffee flavor. They're a great all natural candy to add to your pantry for a sweet treat!

3. Planners & Stationary 

You guys, I have a problem. I cannot go to TJMaxx or Marshalls without browsing the planners and stationary. If you know me, I love planners. I love making lists. I love notebooks. I love pens. I'm just kind of a stationary/planner freak, I can't help it! Usually I just look and don't buy, but yesterday I walked out of TJMaxx with a new planner (I love the polka dots), a little notebook for to do lists, and some funny pens (they say always write, rarely wrong, and occasionally charming). I'm pretttty happy with my purchases. Anyone else as obsessed with planners and other stationary as me? If so, RUN, don't walk to your nearest TJMaxx or Marshalls because they just restocked their planner/stationary section for the upcoming school year. If you'd rather online shop - I couldn't find my exact planner online, but HERE is one by the same brand. 

4. Laughing Cow Cheese 

I'm also loving these little wedges of laughing cow cheese. I've been adding one to my scrambled eggs just as I take them out of the pan. The cheese melts perfectly so that you can kind of "stir" them into your eggs and it tastes super delicious!

5. Stella & Dot Bracelets 

I follow Stella & Dot on Instagram and saw this picture on their feed this week. I love the mixture of the bracelets and the leopard watch, and love the stacked look! I already have the gold, spiky bracelet to the right of the watch, and now I definitely have my eye on the watch and the other bracelets in this picture! Do you guys have any Stella & Dot jewelry? I would love to hear about your favorites.

Life Lately & Exercise "Rules"

Gooood morning, everyone! How's your Tuesday going so far? Mine has consisted of working on finishing up my research project from grad school, job hunting, and some cardio - not too bad of a Tuesday! I thought today I would pop in with a "Life Lately" post, along with some of my thoughts on a topic that I'm calling Exercise "Rules". 

Life lately has consisted of finishing up my research project as I mentioned I'm working on today, serious job hunting (getting a little antsy over here), exercising, and enjoying time with friends and family!

Doesn't that salad look so delicious?! I was able to grab lunch with my mom, dad, and sister on my sister's lunch break last week. My sister and dad work about two minutes from each other, so it's nice to be able to sneak in a family lunch during the week. This salad is from a local cafe called Brew Haha. It's romaine lettuce, plain ramen noodles, sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, and red peppers with a sesame-ginger dressing. It was really tasty, and it seems like it wouldn't be too hard to recreate at home!

I've been trying to vary my cardio routine to keep my body guessing. I do cardio three days a week (I follow the BBG guide, read about it HERE) and I've been alternating with going to the nearby high school track and doing intervals and using the Aaptiv app (read about it HERE). The Aaptiv app is quickly becoming my new favorite way to get my cardio in! 

Life lately has also included cooking, like this salmon we threw on the grill the other week. We got this wild caught salmon filet from Whole Foods, and I rubbed it with extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, rosemary, garlic, and some salt & pepper - yum!

That's my life lately - I haven't been super great with snapping pictures so I'll have to get better at that :) 

Sooo, what are these exercise "rules" I'm talking about?

I think that we all set rules for ourselves in all different areas of our lives. We have to stick to our eating "rules" - maybe you have a rule that you have to eat a specific thing for lunch during the weekdays. What I'm talking about today though are those exercise "rules" we set for ourselves. Now, don't get me wrong, I think that setting some rules for ourselves for exercise is a good thing because it holds us accountable. So, the accountability thing is great and all, but sometimes I find that backfires. Say that your rule is that for your cardio you have to run for 3.5 miles, but one day you're just really burnt out from work so those 3.5 miles just don't seem doable. Since you're so tired and you've set this exercise "rule" for yourself, you decide you just can't exercise that day since you don't feel that you would be able to run the 3.5. I'm totally guilty of doing this, but within the last year I've realized that it's OK to deviate from your exercise "rules". You're feeling too tired to run those 3.5 miles today? That's alright! Run 1 mile, walk/run a few miles, or just power walk. The bottom line is:

Some exercise is better than no exercise.

Don't beat yourself up if you can't muster up the energy to get your 3.5 mile run in, but also don't use it as an excuse to get no exercise in. Don't feel like you're not doing as well because you're just going for a walk instead of a run - exercise is exercise and calories burned are calories burned, period. 

Granted, we all have those days that we are just absolutely spent and need a rest day - which is very important too so that your body can recover! I just think it's important to be mindful of your exercise "rules" and how to handle them when you may not be able to stick to them.

Friday Favorites #3

Happy Friday, friends! What do you all have planned for this weekend? I have one of my friend's housewarming parties on Saturday, but other than that it should be a pretty low-key weekend. It's supposed to be REALLY, really, really hot here, so I'll probably be inside for most of the weekend. It's time for Friday Favorites though, so let's jump right into what I've been loving this week!

1. Munchkin and Lola

After Munch's little health scare this week I'm definitely cherishing my little pups a little bit more! If you know me, you know I'm pretty obsessed with my pugs so Munchkin not feeling well was definitely not a fun time. I also realized I haven't really "introduced" my dogs on here yet, so why not do a shot intro today?! Munchkin is our oldest pug, she's 13, and she is quite the feisty gal (only getting feistier with her age). She barks until she gets what she wants, which is usually food (typical pug), which can be a bit annoying, but we love her anyways :) She's the cuddlier one of the two, and loves to be picked up and snuggled. She's totally the Queen of the house!

Lola is the younger of the two, she's 10, and she has quite the funny personality! Lo does everything on her terms - if you want to cuddle with her, pet her, pretty much anything, she's going to play hard to get. You'll finally give up trying to get her to come over to you, and then she'll decide to come over herself. This pup also has one of the longest tongues I've ever seen, and it's pretty funny when she has it hanging out! Lola is also a huge scaredy cat, she's scared of the vacuum, most other dogs, and pretty much anything that she isn't familiar with. Unlike Munchkin, Lola has the silliest bark and rarely uses it!

2. Glossier's Boy Brow

Excuse my chipped nails in the picture, but shoutout to Mama Ferguson for this one! My mom always finds the best makeup and this product/makeup line is no exception. Glossier is a fairly new makeup line and I highly suggest you go check them out (click HERE to head to their website). Their Boy Brow product is awesome! It's honestly a fool-proof way to thicken and define your brows without giving them that scary, unnatural look AND your brows won't feel gross and stiff afterwards (click HERE for the full description of Boy Brow)

3. Gilmore Girls

Hi, my name is Jenna, and I'm addicted to Gilmore Girls. Okay, so I know that I'm SUPER late to the party on Gilmore Girls, but better late than never, right?! My mom and I have already gotten through Season 1 and half of Season 2 on Netflix. This show is ADDICTING and I just love Lorelai and Rory! Anyone else out there Gilmore Girls fans?!

4. Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Pretzel Slims 

Trader Joes, ya did it again! These dark chocolate covered pretzel slims are the perfect sweet treat for after dinner (or whenever)! If you're looking for a salty, sweet, and crunchy snack to satisfy your craving then definitely pick up a bag of these (or 4 like we did, oops) the next time you find yourself at Trader Joes. 

5. Starting Joyfully Jenna 

Last but not least, a favorite of mine this week is definitely being able to create this blog and share with all of you! I love being able to share what I'm passionate about with other people and I'm so happy I finally decided to start this blog. I hope you guys have enjoyed the content so far, and I'm looking forward to providing more and more! AMRAP Workout

Hey, hi, hello! I hope your Tuesday is off to a good start! I'm typing up this blog post on Monday night after a long day, starting at 4AM, of a sick dog (poor Munchkin). Crossing my fingers that by the time you all are reading this post that she feels a little bit better! 

Since it's been a long day and I'm a pretty tired, this post may be on the shorter side! Has anyone heard of AMRAP workouts before? It stands for 'As Many Reps As Possible'. These workouts showed up frequently for my students during my teaching days during grad school and when told that we would be doing an AMRAP workout, the students knew it was going to be a challenging day. 

AMRAP workouts consist of a set amount of exercises for a certain amount of minutes. This is pretty much what the Kayla Itsines' BBG program is! For example, you could have two different 'AMRAPS' for two sets of six minutes each. 

AMRAP 1 could be - 24 lunges (12 each leg), 15 jump squats, 15 push-ups, & 15 squats

AMRAP 2 could be - 40 mt. climbers (20 each leg), 15 sit-ups, 16 plank-ups (8 each arm), & 15 sumo squats 

You would start with AMRAP 1 by setting your timer for 6 minutes. Go through the exercises until time is up. How many times can you get through AKA how many reps can you get through? Remember, never compromise your form to go at a faster pace - you can get injured that way! Once the timer goes off, move onto AMRAP 2, set your timer for six minutes and go through those reps/exercises until the timer goes off. Go back to AMRAP 1 and 2 one more time. 

AMRAP workouts are tough, but so worth it in my opinion - you'll end up nice and sweaty at the end! You can change them up with any exercises you want. Want to work on more cardio one day? Throw in more cardio-based exercises. Want to focus more on legs? Add in more leg moves! 

AMRAP workouts are just another way to add variety to your typical exercise routine. I think it's really important (at least for me) to switch up my workout routine to fight boredom and to keep my muscles guessing!
