Breathe In, Breathe Out: Why You Should Be Using Essential Oils

Gooood morning, lovely people! It's THURSDAY which means tomorrow is FRI-YAY! You're almost there, you can do it :)

Today I'll be spending the day with my mom at a food show she goes to for her work each year (she's the food director at the high school I went to). I'm interested to see what vendors are offering for school lunches, it shall be interesting! Let's dive right into what I'm talking about today...

I'm talking about essential oils! I first started to get interested in essential oils during my first year of graduate school when I took an Integrative Health class. We talked a little bit about aromatherapy and got to play around with some different essential oils and it really sparked my interest.

Now, we all know the power of scent - certain smells remind of us specific people or memories, and can even be calming or comforting. Maybe a certain perfume reminds you of your mom or grandmother and when you get a whiff of it, it makes you feel safe and calm. Or, maybe when you smell a homemade meal, like a roasted turkey and mashed potatoes it reminds you of home and it gives you those warm, fuzzy feelings. But did you know that some scents can actually improve your health? Yup, breathing in certain essential oils can help you to relax, sleep, and get rid of headaches, amongst other benefits.

So, what exactly are essential oils? Well, they're actually highly concentrated plant components. You can apply them directly to your skin, inhale them, or by using a diffuser. I decided to go the diffuser route, and my wonderful sister and soon to be brother-in-law bought me the one I had my eye on! I went for the doTERRA Petal Diffuser and my sister ordered it right off of Amazon (click HERE to get your doTERRA Petal Diffuser). I've been super, super happy with my choice of the doTERRA diffuser. All you have to do is take the top off of the diffuser, fill it up with water to the red marker, and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. The doTERRA diffuser has a 1 hour, 2 hour, or 4 hour mist setting and it also lights up when it's diffusing your essential oil, which makes for relaxing, spa-like feel!  

As far as the essential oils to use, make sure that you get a therapeutic-grade essential oil to ensure that you're getting pure and quality oils to use. If they aren't therapeutic-grade, you're risking that there may be some added synthetic fragrance to the oils - no thanks! My favorite so far has been the doTERRA brand in the OnGuard scent (click HERE to buy the OnGuard essential oil). It's a mixture of Wild Orange, Clove Bud, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils (it smells heavenly), and it's formulated to support healthy immune function. It's a little bit pricey, but a little goes a long way!

You can also use this oil as a non-toxic cleaner which is a bonus! The first picture I attached in this post is a kit my mom recently bought off of Amazon. For around $15, I think it's a good starter kit (click HERE for that kit) and it's also therapeutic grade! The kit comes with Lavender, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Orange, and Lemongrass. My mom and I have been using about 10 drops of one of them in each load of laundry we do. All you have to do is add 10-15 drops to your laundry detergent (it works best if you use unscented laundry detergent) and voila, you have some great smelling clothes! It's a great alternative to using the chemical-filled options that you can buy at the store to make your clothes smell better.
