Friday Favorites #13

Happy Friday! I hope that you all have some great plans lined up for this weekend. My good friend Taylor is in town this weekend with her new puppy so I'm going to meet up with her on Saturday night. I can't wait to catch up with her and also meet her cute puppy named Kona! On Sunday I'll be headed to the JDRF walk that I blogged about a few weeks ago. If you haven't gotten a chance to donate to Marco's team Beat the Beetus and would like to, click HERE. Your donation goes towards research for Type 1 Diabetes and is greatly appreciated. No amount is too small!

As usual, I'm sharing my favorites of the week. I'd love to hear what you've been loving this week, too! Share your favorites in the comments :)

1. The Dog House

As I mentioned on Wednesday, Lola had some testing to get done at the eye doctor to see if she is a candidate for surgery. The testing takes about an hour, so we were told to drop her off around 11:30AM and then come back to get her. My dad and I decided to grab some lunch during that time, and it just so happens that Lola's eye doctor is right by The Dog House. My mom's dad and his brothers opened up a few restaurants around the local area, one of them being The Dog House. If you live in Delaware and you aren't familiar with The Dog House, I'm sure you know The Charcoal Pit, which my grandfather and his brothers also opened. My grandfather passed before I was born, and his brothers have also passed, so they no longer own the restaurants, but we still love to go now and then. I've been to The Charcoal Pit more times than I can count, but I hadn't been to The Dog House since I was little. It was really cool to be inside the restaurant that my grandfather worked so hard to build! The Dog House is known for their footlong hotdogs so I treated myself to one with everything on it (per my mom's recommendation), and it was really good. Yes, I did eat the whole thing and all of the fries. No regrets.

2. Pumpkin Pecan Granola

I posted the recipe for pumpkin pecan granola a few weeks ago, and by now the batch I made is long gone. I love this granola (a little too much probably) because it's a sweet treat that tastes like pumpkin pie, without all of the extra calories. If you haven't tried out this recipe yet and want to, click here. It's perfect to make on a Sunday to have around for breakfast or a snack for the upcoming week!

3. Real Techniques Complexion Sponge

Who else uses Beauty Blenders? Yeah, I did too, and then I found Real Techniques Complexion Sponges. You can get TWO of these sponges for about $10. No more spending close to $20 on ONE Beauty Blender sponge. Don't you love finding something just as great as a more expensive product for a fraction of the cost? Me too.

4. Fall Desktop Background

I don't know if it's just me, but I get really excited to change my computer desktop wallpaper to match the season. Nerdy, right? I think I like it because I spend so much time on my computer. I like being able to sneak a glance at in now and then while I'm working and it makes me get excited about the season and the holidays coming up. I got my current background from one of my favorites bloggers, Gal Meets Glam. She's a fashion blogger and it's safe to say I wish I could steal her closet. Her husband is a photographer and he takes gorgeous photos, including the one above!

5. My Current Breakfast on Repeat

Do you guys have a breakfast that just seems to be on repeat these days? As soon as the colder weather hit I wasn't really in the mood for a smoothie in the morning, so I turned to oatmeal. A good tip with oatmeal is to buy plain oatmeal, not the pre-packaged flavored ones (like maple and brown sugar). I'll add cinnamon, a little bit of maple syrup, and banana slices to my plain oatmeal to add just enough sweetness. You'll save yourself a good amount of sugar by starting with plain oatmeal instead of the flavored packets!

That's what I've been loving this week! Don't forget to let me know your favorites of the week in the comments.

Happy Weekend!

Friday Favorites #11

Helllllo, Friday! We made it! I hope you guys have the perfect plans lined up this weekend - whether that's relaxing and a doing a whole lot of nothing or a jam-packed weekend with friends. Whatever you're doing, I hope you enjoy it!

Before I sign off for the weekend I'm stopping by with my usual round-up of my favorite things of the week. As always, I'd love to hear what you've been loving this week in the comments! Don't be shy :)

1. Marshalls Finds

Man, oh man. I probably should just ban myself from going to Marshalls. I always think I'll be able to go and just window shop, but I'm totally and completely lying to myself haha. No matter how hard I try not to buy anything I always walk out of that store with at least one thing (let's be honest, usually multiple things). On my last trip to "window shop" I found yet another notebook that I "needed" with a sassy saying on it. Have I told you guys about my obsession with notebooks/stationary yet? Well, if I didn't, now ya know! I also got super comfy and cute cheetah indoor/outdoor slippers. No regrets.

2. The Ninja Coffee Bar

Look guys, I know this appeared on the blog earlier in the week (and last week), but I just love it so much. I made myself a homemade cappuccino this morning and it was wonderful. You just can't beat making yourself a delicious cup of coffee that doesn't cost you $5 (and that you don't have to get out of your PJs to get). Oh, and believe me, I'm no coffee expert and the Ninja Coffee Bar makes it so easy to make speciality drinks. My close girlfriends reading this are probably laughing due to my inability to handle caffeine, but I think I'm doing far :) Bottom line: this should be at the top of your Christmas list this year (or you can totally just buy it for yourself now and call it an early Christmas gift... to yourself)!

3. PHL Hat

image via

I have a thing for hats. I collect them. A lot of them. And I really want this one. To be honest, I'm really not sure why I'm so obsessed with this hat. Maybe it's the clean lines? The colors? I don't know, but I like it, and I want it. Shop Aviate is apparently the "original airport code brand" and you'll be able to find any airport code you can think of on there. I just happen to live near Philly, so that's why I'm looking to snag that one! Please don't judge me for my weird obsession :)

4. Essie Gel Setter Top Coat

I'm a girl on a budget, which means I unfortunately can't go and get gel manicures all of the time. BUT with Essie's Gel Setter Top Coat my nails look like I have a gel manicure, without the hassle of having to go back to the salon to get it taken off. This top coat makes your nail polish last longer and look shinier. It also comes off as easily as regular nail polish and won't make your nails brittle or weak like your typical gel manicure. Score!

5. Pug Christmas Card

I think I found the cutest Christmas cards ever (and of course they involve pugs). I mean, what's cuter than a pug with antlers and a red nose, guys? The correct answer is... nothing. I'll definitely be ordering some of these for Christmas (just kidding, I already did). Robert's artwork is great, definitely check it out over on Etsy! He also has a few other extremely cute dog cards for Christmas (golden retriever, schnauzer, and weimaraner). His cards and other artwork is so beautifully done, and I love that by buying his Christmas cards I'll get to support a small business.

Alrighty, guys, that's my round-up for this week! Don't forget to let me know what you've been loving this week!

Happy Weekend!

Friday Favorites #10

Hey, hey, hey, it's Friday! I hope that you have some fun plans lined up for the weekend! My sister will be home part of the weekend because my mom's birthday is on Sunday so we'll be doing some bridesmaid dress shopping, going out for my mom's birthday dinner, and just having some sister time which I'm pretty excited about!

Before I sign off for the weekend I wanted to stop by with my typical round-up of my favorites of the week. So, let's get right into them! As always, I would love to hear what you've been loving this week too, so make sure to leave a comment :)

1. Zazzle Business Cards

A month or two ago I decided it was time to order some business cards, so I headed over to Vistaprint's website since you know, you see about 300 advertisements for them and their deals everyday haha. But, I wasn't super impressed with their options so I then went to Zazzle's website, and let me tell ya, they have some cool options! I'm really happy with how mine turned out and I feel like they really match my blog and my general "brand". If you're in the market for business cards I would definitely recommend checking them out.

2. Poshmark

Have you guys heard of Poshmark? Basically it's a website (they also have an app) where you can sell any clothes, jewelry, or shoes that you no longer want. About two weeks ago I went through my closet and took out a lot of clothes, jewelry (like the watch in the picture above), and a few other odds and ends that I kept saying I would wear but never did. So, I figured why let it sit in my closet for another year when I could make a little extra cash from it! I still have some more items to add, so feel free to check out my Poshmark "closet" (click HERE) frequently if you're interested in buying anything!

3. Mindfulness Glitter Jar

This made it onto the Friday favorites because it's been my most pinned post over on Pinterest! If you missed the post on how to make your own mindfulness glitter jar, click HERE. These jars are not only fun to make, but they truly do have a calming effect. If you have time over the weekend pick up the supplies to make one!

4. Cornbread

Super random, I know, but my dad requested a beef stew earlier this week, and I decided to make some cornbread to go with it. The cornbread recipe I used was so easy and was sweetened with honey, no sugar, which made it a whole lot healthier than a lot of other recipes I've seen. I'll be sharing the recipe on the blog soon, along with my favorite chili recipe! Stay tuned :)

Alright, guys, that's all I've got for this week's Friday Favorites. Don't forget to let me know what you've been loving this week in the comments! Have an awesome weekend :)

Friday Favorites #109

Hello, hello, friends! It's Friday, that happiest day of the week! I hope that your upcoming weekend is the perfect combination of fun and relaxing. I have some work to do on my research study, but on Saturday my mom, sister, my sister's future mother-in-law, and I are all going to look at rehearsal dinner venues. It should be a fun time! Other than that, my weekend plans are up in the air.

Before I sign off for the weekend I wanted to check in with my favorites of the week! Feel free the chime in with what you're loving this week in the comments. I'd love to hear from ya!

1. Parenthood

Guys, this is bad. I cannot, CANNOT stop watching this show. One day I was innocently perusing Netflix searching for a show to just watch an episode of. Fast forward and now I'm on season 3 of the series. Who else loves this show? I mean, I literally want to be a Braverman. Can't stop, won't stop. I'll definitely be sneaking in an episode or two this weekend.

2. Banana Oat Muffins

Remember those banana oat muffins that showed up on the blog not too long ago? I'm realllly craving some of those right Did you miss this absolutely awesome, delicious, fantastic recipe? Fear not, click HERE. I think I may play around in the kitchen this weekend and experiment with this recipe a bit to make it more fall-like. Stay tuned!

3. Pumpkins

My mom and I went to Milburn Orchards a week or so ago, and there's just something about seeing a field full of pumpkins that just makes me happy. Anybody else with me on this one? Fall is really one of the best seasons in my opinion, and pumpkins symbolize what's to come: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and just a lot of quality time spent with my family, which I love! You rock, Fall, don't change.

4. The Ninja Coffee Bar

My parent's anniversary was this past weekend, and my dad gifted my mom the Ninja Coffee Bar. Guys, this coffee maker (excuse me, coffee bar) is pretty sweet. It can brew a rich cup of coffee, make speciality drinks (hello, pumpkin spice latte recipe comin' at ya soon), make a mean cup of iced coffee, and it comes with a handy-dandy little milk frother. It's awesome, to say the least. So, if you're a coffee lover you need to put this at the tip-top of your wish list!

Alright, friends, that's what I've been loving this week! Don't forget to let me know what you've been loving by leaving me a comment :)

Happy Weekend!

Friday Favorites #108

Hey, hi, hello! It's everyone's favorite day of the week - Friday!!! Woooohoooo :) I'm stopping by on this fine Friday morning with a Friday Favorites post. BUT I'm switching it up on you again. Today I'm going to talk about my favorite bars, (no, not like alcoholic, drinking bars) protein bars, that is ;P

Don't be fooled by buzzwords.

When I'm looking for a bar to grab as an on-the-go snack I want one that's high in protein, low in sugar, and has some fiber snuck in there too! So many (too many in my opinion) granola and protein bars are LOADED with sugar and really are not healthy options. The marketing on the packages can fool you so easily with buzzwords like: all natural, organic, high in protein, etc. Although these are definitely words you want to look for, they can also distract you from what else is going on in the bar.

Scan the ingredient list.

You always, always, always (did I say always enough?) want to turn over the package and look at the ingredients. If sugar is the first, second, or even third ingredient it's a big no-go in my book. You can also peak at how many grams of sugar are in the bar itself, but my first step is always to look at the ingredients list. This goes for all other pre-packaged food products too.

How long is the ingredient list?

Another easy step to take is to look at how long the ingredients list is. Is it so long that the ingredient words are too tiny to read? Put it back on the shelf and walk away. A tiny bar should NOT have many ingredients, nor should any pre-packaged food product in my opinion.

Can you pronounce all of the ingredients?

Lastly, can you pronounce the ingredients? If not, back on the shelf it goes. With any food product that you're buying you should be able to pronounce and recognize the ingredients.

Whole foods will always trump bars.

One more thing before I list off my favorite bars... I don't think bars should be a regular/daily snack. I'm a firm believer in eating WHOLE foods which means fruits, veggies, grains, etc. It's always going to be a better option (in my opinion) to eat an apple with peanut butter or carrots and hummus then to grab for a bar. BUT sometimes we don't have those options, which is when a bar like the ones below come in handy!

1. Rx Bars

Oh, Rx Bars, what did I do before I found you? These trusty bars have shown up in my Friday favorite posts before, and for good reason! The ingredients in these bars make them a complete winner and so does their flavor (they're yummy). I mean, you CANNOT beat them. See those ingredients there right on the front of the package? Those are the only ingredients in these babies. No, I'm not lying. Oh, and guess what? Trader Joe's now carries Rx Bars which is awesome because we all know that Trader Joe's is always cheaper than Whole Foods. You can pick these winners up for $1.50 each at your local TJ's!

2. Lara Bars

Remember when I asked what I did before Rx Bars? The answer to that question would be good old Lara Bars. These gems have been around for awhile, and rightfully so. Just like Rx bars, Lara bars have very few ingredients. The pecan pie flavor only has dates, pecans, and almonds. For another example, the apple pie flavor only has dates, almonds, unsweetened apples, walnuts, raisins, and cinnamon. Pretty awesome, right? So, basically I would call these the originals, before the Rx bars came into play. The great thing about Lara bars (besides their amazing flavor) is that they're sold pretty much everywhere! Just this week I saw that boxes of Lara bars (five in each box) were on sale for $5 at Target. Also, just saying, they have a limited edition Pumpkin Pie flavor out right now...

JiMMYBAR! Snack Bars are a new find of mine. I found these babies last week at Target (I go to Target way, way too much). The story of the creation of JiMMYBAR that's on the back of their box really won me over. In short, "JiMMYBAR! was created by a brother and sister that decided to tackle the US food and health epidemic by creating a natural foods company with the mandate that a 6 year old should be able to read the ingredients. Let's be honest, if you have to Google the ingredients in your food, they probably aren't good for you." JiMMYBAR! I TOTALLY AGREE! I mean, they basically just took the words right out of my mouth. Very similar to Lara and Rx bars, JiMMYBARS! have very few ingredients. The Super Hip Chocolate Chip flavor has dates, chocolate chips, crisp brown rice, peanuts, almonds, almond butter, and walnuts. The How 'Bout Dem Apples (hi, Good Will Hunting) flavor has dates, almond butter, apple, crisp brown rice, oats, walnuts, honey, vanilla and cinnamon. Friends, just go to your Target now and buy a box of these babies. Trust me :)

4. Oatmega Bars

I stumbled upon Oatmega bars when I was at Giant picking up some odds and ends for dinner one night. I've only seen these bars at Giant, but I'm sure there at other common grocery stores too! I was immediately attracted to the brownie crisp flavor, yum! These bars check off all of the requirements on my checklist: they're high in protein, low in sugar, and pack in some fiber too! They also have some some omega-3s and antioxidants from decaffeinated green tea. If you're a fan of a bar with more of a crunchy, protein bar texture, you'll love oatmega bars!

5. Gomacro Bars

Last, but certainly not least - gomacro bars. These bars are extremely delicious, which is probably due to their use of chocolate chips :) Some of the gomacro bar flavors can be higher in sugar than other bars I've talked about in this post due to their use of chocolate chips! These plant-based bars are still a good option when looking for a protein-packed snack, and the flavor will definitely appeal to most people. They recently started stocking these at Trader Joe's now too, which again, is always cheaper than Whole Foods. So, if you want to give these bars a try, head on over to your local TJ's to pick up a few!

Again, whole foods, like carrots and hummus, will always be a better choice than a pre-packaged bar, but I think it's a great idea to keep a bar like the ones above handy. I'll keep one in my purse or backpack so that if I'm ever out and get hungry I have one of those to grab instead of choosing something unhealthy!

Alright, friends, it's time for me to sign off! I hope that this blog post will help you navigate the world of granola and protein bars :)

Question of the Day: What's your favorite protein bar?

Happy Weekend!
